The Early Years of the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary
Written by: Janey Sebast
January 1, 1986
Some of the firemen’s wives from the
community used to render their services to assist the firemen at
different functions. During fires, (serving coffee and sandwiches); also
different events to help the fire company.
The small group decided it was time
to make the “unofficial” group and “official” group, that was
associated with the fire company.
Thus; the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire
Department Auxiliary was formed on October 19, 1970. This
organization shall be known as The
Women’s Auxiliary to the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. The
object of this group is to aid in raising funds for the Fire Department
and assist in their projects; to promote harmony and good will and
advance civic welfare to the community.
This group started with 17 original
members, whom are called Charter members. There are four
members still active. They are as
follows: Shirley Robertson, Esther Sebast, Gloria Petty, and Carol
Waite.
In years passed the Auxiliary has
helped to purchase much needed equipment for the firemen and the company
as a whole; raised monies for the families, in the community who lost
their homes (due to fires). Some of the Auxiliary members belong to the
Cossayuna First Response Team (Emergency Medical Team).
Some of the fund raising events are
as follows: Card parties, suppers, tag sales, raffles, food sales, and
bazaars.
The original seventeen members of the
Cossayuna Auxiliary are as follows:
Ada Bailey, Carol Bailey, Virginia
(Ginny) Bain, Edith Lacy (president), Muriel Lacy, Florence McIntyre,
Diane McMorris (vice president), Donna Morrison, Gloria Petty, Helen
Petty, Laura Petty (sunshine committee), Shirley Robertson (sunshine
committee), Gladys Sheldon, Ethel Smith, Rita Thygesen (secretary),
